What is Oil Pulling? Usage guide
Oil pulling is an ancient mouthwash technique that comes from Ayurveda medicine. It simply consists of rinsing with coconut oil for between 5 and 20 minutes.
The main benefits achieved are: whitening teeth, freshening breath, strengthening gums and even relieving some other skin-related problems and even headaches or migraines.
How does Oil Pulling work?
Oil pulling bases its action on the lipophilic effect that oil has on bacteria, heavy metals and environmental toxins. We will take advantage of the fact that there are some bacteria and substances that dissolve in oils to eliminate them from the mouth.
Although this is that simple, there are a series of mistakes that we make when using oil pulling that lead to it not being as effective as it should be.
Main errors in the use of Oil Pulling
Use more quantity than necessary
This is probably the first mistake of all. It is not necessary to use a large amount of rinse, one or two teaspoons of Oil Pulling is more than enough. We recommend using just one teaspoon to start, and then you can increase up to two if you see that you need more to complete the rinse.
Shake the product continuously
It is recommended to keep the product in the mouth between 5 and 20 minutes, and that can be very long. At first we thought that you have to have it constantly moving in your mouth but that is not the case. You can alternate between shaking it and simply holding it in your mouth to relax your jaw.
Use less time than necessary
If you are used to mouthwashes you will tend to use this product for about a minute. This time is insufficient. As I mentioned before, you should keep it in your mouth for 5 to 20 minutes. But for beginners, you can start with 3 minutes and gradually increase that time until you reach 20 minutes if you want. More than that time does not provide any greater benefit.
Do not swallow the oil
Although the coconut oil this product is made with is food grade, do not swallow it. Remember that after keeping it in your mouth it will be full of bacteria and toxins.
Do not spit in the sink
Coconut oil solidifies at about 20 degrees. If you spit in the sink it will solidify in the pipes. Although the coconut oil that Georganics uses is fractionated so that this does not happen, we recommend spitting on a piece of paper and throwing it in the trash. This way the oil will not end up polluting our seas.
Rinse with water afterwards
The oil leaves an oily sensation in the mouth, to remove it, simply rinse with water afterwards, it is recommended. Remember that Oil pulling is not a mouthwash that leaves a good taste in your mouth, it is something else.
In the oral hygiene section you will find Oil pulling, toothpastes and brushes for complete and healthy hygiene.
